SELECT ShingleMaster™ Warranty + Extended Coverage

Of course, there are clear benefits that come with being the region’s top CertainTeed SELECT ShingleMaster™. With this certification, Western Products is passing the benefits on to you.

CertainTeed is a trusted company that already backs its roofing materials with a Lifetime Limited Warranty on most shingle products. For a specified period of time, their shingles are also covered by the standard SureStart protection. This means that, for no charge, CertainTeed will repair or replace defective shingles during the applicable SureStart period. Also, CertainTeed is the only manufacturer to cover all manufacturing defects, including aesthetic flaws.

As a CertainTeed SELECT ShingleMaster roofing company, Western Products can extend CertainTeed’s SureStart PLUS coverage and duration when our credentialed contractors install an Integrity Roof System. Learn more about the CertainTeed roofing warranty.

Common Questions: CertainTeed Roofing Warranty

Before investing to improve your home, pay close attention to the shingle warranty. It’s important to realize that not all warranties are created equal. There are many common misconceptions about shingle warranties. Here, we’ll answer your most common questions, clearly and simply.

Do I need a roof warranty?

Yes! Since a roof is such a large investment, and potentially lasts for several decades, having a good roof warranty is crucial. By understanding what your warranty covers, you could end up saving yourself a significant amount of money.

How likely is it that I will have problems with my new asphalt roof?

At Western Products, we only install the highest-quality asphalt roofs for our customers. Based on CertainTeed’s state-of-the-art manufacturing process, the chances of experiencing a problem with a new roof are about one in 1,000! Serious problems with CertainTeed roofing materials are rare. But, just in case, the CertainTeed SureStart PLUS warranty will have you covered.

What if there are problems with my roof’s installation?

According to experts, the majority of roof problems can be traced back to contractor workmanship, not the roof materials. This is why it’s important to choose a certified CertainTeed SELECT ShingleMaster contractor like Western Products. We’ve been installing roofs since 1948, and we have excellent customer satisfaction rates!

What does a manufacturer’s warranty mean?

In a nutshell, CertainTeed roofing product warranties cover you if there is a problem with your shingles due to an issue that occurred during the manufacturing process. This issue is commonly referred to as a “manufacturing defect”. You’ll be protected from possible manufacturing defects, for a specified amount of time. CertainTeed’s shingle warranty is a commitment to stand behind our shingles.

What is considered a manufacturing defect?

When a shingle does not meet CertainTeed’s product specifications or high standards, it is then classified as a manufacturing defect. CertainTeed goes to great lengths to ensure that each shingle is properly made according to well-proven specifications. To do this, they utilize state-of-the-art technology and quality control measures.

What should I do if I think my shingles have a manufacturing defect?

If you suspect a manufacturing-related issue, and your roof is less than one year old, contact Western Products right away. Then, our team will contact a CertainTeed representative on your behalf. If your roof is over a year old, you can go to www.ctroof.com to submit a claim to CertainTeed directly.

In the event of a manufacturing defect, what would be covered?

This is where it helps to understand the warranty coverage that comes with your shingles. Referring to our Asphalt Products Limited Warranty, let’s use CertainTeed’s Landmark® PRO, installed on a single-family, detached home, as an example. Landmark® PRO carries a limited lifetime warranty with 10 years of SureStart™ protection.

A “limited lifetime warranty” means coverage for as long as you, as an individual homeowner, own your home — NOT for the life of the home. This also does not mean the shingles will last a lifetime. Due to the impact and severity of weather conditions, freeze/thaw cycles, and UV rays, your shingle’s life span can be diminished.

“SureStart protection” provides full replacement coverage within years 1-10 in the event of a manufacturing defect; referred to as the “non-prorated” period/coverage. CertainTeed will pay to tear off the old roof, dispose of the material, replace it with new shingles and metal flashings, and pay for the labor to install them.

Landmark® PRO also carries 15 years of limited coverage against:
• Shingle blow-off for winds up to 110 miles per hour.
• Growth of blue-green algae.

How do CertainTeed’s warranties compare to others?

Other companies will only cover you if the manufacturing defect affects the performance of the shingles, or results in the roof leaking. With CertainTeed shingles, if you have a manufacturing defect, your home will be covered. This means you’re protected, whether or not your roof is leaking or not during the entire warranty coverage period.

What happens if there is a manufacturing defect with my Landmark® PRO shingles after 10 years?

As long as you live in the home, starting at year 11, your shingles will be covered. You will receive a percentage of the original purchase price of the shingles — a number that gradually decreases each month as the roof gets older. As a “prorated coverage,” your responsibilities would include: paying to tear off the roof, dispose of it, and install new shingles.

If I sell my home, is the warranty coverage for my Landmark® PRO roof transferable?

Yes, it can fully transfer once. But, if the transfer occurs during the SureStart™ period, the limited lifetime warranty is reduced to a 50-year warranty for the subsequent owner.

If you sell your home and transfer the warranty to the new owner after the SureStart™ period has expired, the warranty period is two years for the subsequent owner.

Do all CertainTeed roofing products come with a limited lifetime warranty?

No, warranties vary by product. Most CertainTeed shingles carry the same type of warranty coverage as Landmark® PRO, but some have less coverage. For more details, please refer to the written, limited warranty for specific shingles and coverage information.

Do you offer any type of extended warranty program for roofs, as they do for electronics and cars?

Certainly. After investing money in a new roof, the last thing you want to worry about is buying another one. CertainTeed offers three levels of extended warranty protection, which are an extension of our SureStart™ protection.

What are the options?

CertainTeed offers SureStart™ Plus 3-Star, SureStart™ Plus 4-Star, and SureStart™ Plus 5-Star warranties. As you can imagine, the higher the number, the better the coverage.

Let’s break it down using our Landmark® PRO example on a detached, single-family home:

  • SureStart™ Plus 5-Star is the best extended warranty in the industry. In the event of a shingle manufacturing defect, you will be fully covered for 50 years with our 5-Star coverage. This includes the tear-off of the old material, disposal, new shingles, and the labor to install them. Also, CertainTeed warrants your contractor’s workmanship for 25 years.
  • SureStart™ Plus 4-Star coverage includes all of the elements of the 5-Star except the contractor’s workmanship.
  • SureStart™ Plus 3-Star coverage fully covers you for 20 years and does not include disposal of the affected material or the contractor’s workmanship.

Please remember: This extended warranty coverage is for manufacturing defects, not for normal wear and tear over the shingles’ life span.

How can I take advantage of this?

CertainTeed authorizes only credentialed ShingleMaster™ and SELECT ShingleMaster™ contractors to offer SureStart™ Plus warranties when they install the components of CertainTeed’s Integrity Roof System™.

Can CertainTeed shingles only be installed by CertainTeed ShingleMasters™ and SELECT ShingleMasters™?

Any roofing contractor can install CertainTeed shingles. However, if they don’t carry one of these two credentials, you won’t be able to take advantage of the extended warranty options.

Why can’t just any contractor offer these extended warranties?

Contractors who participate in CertainTeed’s ShingleMaster™ and SELECT ShingleMaster™ credential programs have passed a series of installation and business-oriented courses. Because of this, CertainTeed has confidence that these installers are willing, able, and interested in providing the best possible installation and service to their customers.
