What began in the home garage of Tom Hammer in Minneapolis, MN, as a custom cabinet shop, producing cabinets primarily for the local builder trade, has evolved into the #1 Custom Cabinet Manufacturer within the custom cabinet market. As Crystal continues to explore new cabinet markets, we are determined to offer the finest in custom cabinetry design available today – and in the future.

1947 Crystal Cabinet Works, Inc. began at 70 Willow Street, Minneapolis, MN, by Tom Hammer, as a custom cabinet shop, producing cabinets primarily for the local builder trade.

1949   The shop was moved to a northern suburb, Crystal, MN and the company formally became known as Crystal Cabinet Works, Inc.

1959   Crystal Cabinets was relocated to Osseo, MN, where Tom Hammer’s son, Jeff, current owner and president, became active in the business.

1972-
1973
It was at this time when Jeff began to develop a dealer network for marketing Crystal as a “modular” custom cabinet company. Crystal’s phenomenal growth period began during this era of setting up dealerships to sell cabinetry, improving the “modular” design of the boxwork, and understanding the need to offer quality, finished cabinetry versus unfinished cabinetry.

1974   Due to the growth, the company moved into a new plant in Rogers, MN.

1975   On August 7, fire partially destroyed the plant in Rogers. Determined to quickly start up operations again, Jeff met with an enthusiastic banker in Princeton, MN. The company was able to take advantage of an existing building; operations were set up, and within one month the business was running smoothly again.

1975-
1980
During this time, the business quadrupled in size and more space was required. In 1980, 20 acres were purchased on the south side of Princeton, and a new plant with 92, 000 square feet was constructed at the present location. Two years later, Crystal was adding on again.

1990   With additions and the acquiring of another existing building, the size of the business reached a total of 253,000 square feet.

2000   Crystal acquired another 71,000-square-foot manufacturing facility located in Sauk Rapids, MN. This new acquisition brought Crystal’s combined square footage total to 324,000.

2005   Crystal introduces Keyline, the newest member of product offerings. A distinct collection of Crystal’s most sought-after custom design elements paired with an affordable box construction.

2006

Crystal introduces Green-core to its product offering. Crystal’s Green-Core products are made with materials that have a reduced effect on human health and the environment and are a perfect option for the environmentally- and health-conscious consumer.

2007   Crystal introduces Encore, the newest member of product offerings. Encore’s frameless cabinetry was created by selecting many of Quest’s most popular door styles, woods, finishes and sought-after design elements.

2007   Crystal achieves certification under Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association’s new Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP). Crystal is proud to have been directly involved with the development of the program, which is designed as a framework for manufacturers to highlight sound environmental business practices concerning: product and process resource management, air quality, environmental management policies an systems, and community relations.
